People who read for pleasure have better imagination and language skills than those who prefer watching TV. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

In this fast-paced and changing world seen on current living standard, people are putting more attention on reading for entertainment over watching TV. It is suggested that individuals who read are better at imagining and speaking certain language from those who watch TV. This essay completely agrees with this assertion and will be further elaborated.

First of all reading does not only give pleasure to reader but allows them to think of what is being described by the book. This is also where prior knowledge comes to play combined with new knowledge letting readers widen and improve their thinking skills. It is also important to note that as people read, they are unconsciously improving their language skills. Take Filipino students for instance, they do not immerse in studying in depth. English grammar, however coupled with hard work and reading, they are able to use English language comparative with that of native English speakers.

Another reason why some readers do well with imagination and language over TV viewers is because watching does not allow audience to think or use their own imagination also, when people watch TV programs, it is expected that they would encounter short breaks or advertisements leading them to lose focus or concentration. Although, while watching TV allows watchers listen to language and may impacts the viewer’s accent, pronunciation or grammar, still studies show that only few were able to improve their language stability by watching TV. In fact, if watching TV may enormously help language learners improve then many units would be installed in numerous academic institution. Unfortunately, reading books are still widely used by student in all level worldwide.

Taking everything into account, it is true that humans who choose reading over watching do better with language and creative thinking. Given this situation, it is then recommended that governments around the world should advocate reading if they want their citizens to improve their language skills and thinking skills.
