Nowadays, more and more people prefer
to socialize online rather than face to face. Is this a positive or negative
development?
Along with the rapid and constant development of
people’s standard of living seen on the utilization of advanced technology,
there is an arising issue on what is real socialization. The question is
whether socialization through the internet is either a positive or negative
change. Although, there may be detriments of online communication, I still concur
that this is still a positive development.
First of all, socialization online has brought
family and friends even closer and stronger. In fact, even children and aged
people do have their own social media accounts such as Facebook, Instagram or Line.
This has led them to be constantly connected even when in distant places. While
in the past, staying in touch with a friend or family member who lives far away
is impossible and talking with them over the phone is costly. That is different
now, the advent of social networking site enhanced stronger family ties and
bonds between friends just with a touch of a button.
Moreover, meeting new people
and widening social
circle is what this change has brought upon us. Also it is possible to learn
and widen our knowledge by connecting with other people from different cultural
backgrounds. This may help us become more likely a well-rounded person by
understanding the differences of peoples values system, creed and opinions.
Take some groups or pages on Facebook for instance. People who have a common
goal such as studying for EILTS may join and learn from other group mates. This
may not only be educational but also opens door to others who are looking for friends
and acquaintances. Thus improving their social communication skills and
improving their language abilities.
Taking everything into account, the negative
impacts of online socialization cannot be overlooked. However, it is still
clear that this trend has contributed to more effective communication between
friends, families or even strangers.
