News reported in the media about
problems and emergencies rather than positive developments is more harmful to
the individual and to society. Do you agree or disagree?
Recently, one of the most controversial issues
relates to media reports is that it suggests that televising issues and urgent
situations instead of the positive ones is detrimental to individuals and
communities. Although I reckon that watching several sad situations on
television may cause alarm and stress to viewers, nevertheless, this essay
fully refutes that it brings more harm than good.
To begin with, it is undeniable that broadcasting
problems or urgent situations may in fact attract more people’s attention to
take action. This would also let them be aware and be updated about latest happenings
around them and in turn, anticipate or prepare in case the same problem or
situation will recur. Take Baguio City in the Philippines for instance. It
almost meets natural calamities such as landslides and floods every year. While
broadcasting these unfortunate situations on the media, people become more
aware and are compelled to help the victims. It is also a way that restores
humanity as local and foreign aids in many forms pours to the victims.
Moreover, choosing to report good news over the
bad ones may let the public be more relaxed while others on the other hand
could in great help. While it is irrefutable that usually some people do not want
to feel sorry to individuals who are in unfortunate situations by watching them
on TV or merely reading about them on print media, others without any
hesitations are willing to lend a hand or send support to them. In fact, in times
like this, it would even test individual’s characters on how to react when
problems or urgent situations come to their lives. Therefore, televising only
the good ones would not let citizens unite and learn how to be human.
